Rust converters and treatments: what to check

Distinguish conversion from protective wax and repair decisions.

A converter and protective wax have different intended jobs. Establish the metal condition and proposed coating system before choosing.

Bilt Hamber describes Hydrate-80 as a converter for rusted steel and a base for further coatings. This is the maker's stated function, not permission to cover structural damage or a finding about every converter.

Inspect first

Perforated or heavily flaking metal, especially near safety-critical mountings, needs competent assessment. Chemical treatment does not replace a repair decision.

Do not combine converter, primer and wax from separate systems on the assumption that more layers must be better. Obtain compatibility advice and keep it in the treatment record.

Document the work

Photograph accessible surfaces before treatment and record the exact product and instructions. DINITROL's library provides another route to technical and safety documents for selected formulations.

For prevention, see cavity wax and underbody protection.
