Recommissioning a car after storage

Organise checks before moving a stored vehicle and recognise when to get help.

Read the storage record before starting. Anything disconnected, removed, covered or changed needs checking against the handbook.

Inspect before moving

Look for new leaks, damage, animal activity and obstructions. Do not start an engine in an enclosed garage. Stop and obtain help if you find fuel smells, damaged wiring or an unknown leak.

Consult the handbook

GOV.UK lists brakes, lights and clear windows among routine checks and directs drivers to their handbook for fluids, batteries and tyres. A checklist cannot establish roadworthiness.

Storage change Return-to-use check
Battery disconnected Correct reconnection procedure
Tyre arrangements changed Condition and specified pressures
Work deferred Book the required maintenance
Cover or enclosure installed Account for cables and accessories

Do not diagnose by test drive

If brakes, steering, tyres or structure are uncertain, arrange an inspection before road use. A current MOT does not resolve a new fault.

Use manufacturer return-from-storage instructions where available. Keep the completed record for next season and add anything missing to the lay-up planner.
