The guides / Laying up

Laying up a classic car

Respect older systems and modifications with a clear storage record.

Modifications can make generic storage advice unsuitable. Start with the handbook, service history and a competent marque specialist.

Record Include
Vehicle identity Model, year and relevant modifications
Existing condition Leaks, corrosion concerns and deferred work
Battery Chemistry, access and approved charging arrangements
Tyres Condition and model-specific storage instructions
Return to use Work needed before the next journey

Resolve conflicting advice

Avoid assembling a procedure from tips for different vehicles. Fuel treatment, disconnection, parking arrangements and supporting a car need instructions appropriate to the model. Ask a specialist where advice conflicts.

Michelin's storage guidance highlights that tyres need attention during inactivity. Do not place a vehicle on supports without approved lifting points, suitable equipment and competent help.

Leave yourself clear notes

Keep the handbook and dated checklist together. Label changes to reverse before starting or moving the vehicle. The lay-up planner helps organise tasks but cannot account for undocumented modifications.

For paperwork, check GOV.UK SORN and vehicle tax. Read historic vehicle guidance separately from the maintenance plan.
